Now we are delighted to announce the artists for feralAIR slots 2025:
Jury statement:
All of the selected artistic positions deal with the mostly unnoticed material backgrounds of digital technologies. Many devices resemble black boxes in which unknown mechanisms take place. Machine learning in particular involves countless hidden processes that are impossible for the end user to understand.
Julia Vollmer deals with machine learning-related warming, specifically with the heat generated by servers when processing our queries, which in turn requires enormous amounts of energy to cool. In an installative work of artistic prototyping, she makes these otherwise abstract connections tangible.
In his project “Logbook of a Digital Conquest: Exploring Data and Power through Auto-Destructive Media”, Paul Takunda Chiwona succeeds in finding a language for the complicated, dangerous and very real data relationships. With a speculative materialist approach, he problematizes a central agent of our time – data between ressouce and notions of objectivity in an artistic process that is also poetic.
Saskia Freeke investigates the daily interactions with digital machines and aims to make transparent the underlying mechanisms. She turns mundane gestures into installations that question our relationship with technology.
We congratulate the three FeralAIRs and are looking forward to seeing them in the fall!

Wir freuen uns sehr, die Künstler:innen bekanntzugeben, die für die drei feralAIR-Residencies 2025 ausgewählt wurden:
Alle ausgewählten künstlerischen Positionen beschäftigen sich mit den meistens unbeachteten materiellen Hintergründen von digitalen Technologien. Viele Geräte gleichen Black Boxes, in denen unbekannte Mechanismen ablaufen. Insbesondere bei machine learning laufen im verborgenen unzählige Prozesse ab, die für den end user unmöglich you durchschauen sind.
Julia Vollmer beschäftigt sich mit KI-bedingter Erwärmung, konkret mit der Hitze, die Server beim Erarbeiten unserer Anfragen erzeugen und deren Kühlung wiederum einen enormen Energieaufwand bedeutet. In einer installativen Arbeit künstlerischen Prototypings macht sie die sonst enträumlichten Zusammenhänge spürbar.
Paul Takunda Chiwona gelingt es in seinem Projektvorhaben “Logbook of a Digital Conquest: Exploring Data and Power through Auto-Destructive Media” eine Sprache für die komplizierte, gefährliche und sehr reale Datenverhältnisse zu finden. Mit einem spekulativ materialisten Ansatz problematisiert er einen zentralen Aktant unserer Zeit – Daten zwischen Ressouce und Objektivitätsvorstellungen in einem auch poetischen künstlerischen Prozess.
Saskia Freeke untersucht die täglichen Interaktionen mit digitalen Apparaten und versucht, die zugrunde liegenden Mechanismen transparent zu machen. Sie verwandelt alltägliche Gesten in Installationen, die unsere Beziehung zur Technologie hinterfragen.
Wir gratulieren den drei FeralAIRs und freuen uns darauf, sie im Herbst begrüßen zu dürfen!
