Why do you want to participate at Schmiede25?

Sometimes I forget why, so here is a reminder.
Thank you for all your whys. unfiltered from the application 2025.
I am so exited to meet you all soon.

a few years ago I had a fantastic time joining the Schmiede crew for the first time, getting to know all of you crazy nerds and building stuff for the sake of it.

I participated last year and that was a life-changing event, opening the door to new sides of my artistry, because I felt the freedom to do whatever I wanted. The inspiring atmosphere, location and community created a safe environment to work and try-out, explore and dive deep.

love the spirit, the people, the place and all of it combined 24/7 for 10 days

Fun and Network

Take time for a dedicated project

“I believe in networking and team work. exploring other techniques and the ability to impart knowledge to others has become my drive over the years. I wish to explore the basic need to participate with like minds and achieve a common goal in the areas of creative projects.”

I want to participate at Schmiede to collaborate with like-minded creatives, expand my artistic vision, and gain hands-on experience in an inspiring and innovative environment. I see this as an opportunity to challenge myself, experiment with new ideas, and connect with a global network of artists who share a passion for creativity and storytelling.

Schmiede’s collaborative and interdisciplinary approach aligns perfectly with my practice of transforming discarded materials into interactive, community-driven art. I thrive in environments where knowledge-sharing and experimentation are encouraged, and I see Schmiede as the ideal space to push my work further by engaging with a diverse network of makers.

I am intrested in installation projects and new possibilities.

“I want to participate at Schmiede because it offers a dynamic and collaborative space where I can engage with like-minded creatives from diverse disciplines. As an artist who integrates visual arts, indigenous architecture, and community development, I believe that Schmiede will allow me to further develop my interdisciplinary approach to art and social change. My work focuses on repurposing materials to tell stories of identity, culture, and social justice, and I see Schmiede as an ideal environment to exchange ideas, collaborate, and gain new perspectives that will enhance my creative process. The opportunity to collaborate with international thinkers and innovators excites me, as I am passionate about merging art, sustainability, and community-driven projects. The collective spirit at Schmiede will not only expand my artistic practice but also help me refine my mission to transform communities through art. I am particularly interested in exploring how creativity can be used to address pressing environmental and social issues, such as eco-friendly art spaces and sustainable building practices, and I believe that Schmiede offers the perfect platform to engage with others working on similar transformative projects. Moreover, I value Schmiede’s commitment to experimentation and learning. As someone who is always seeking to grow and innovate, I am eager to participate in workshops, discussions, and collaborative projects that will challenge and expand my thinking. I look forward to contributing my own experience in art curation, community-based initiatives, and creative expression while learning from the diverse global community at Schmiede. I am confident that this experience will not only broaden my artistic horizons but also deepen my ability to create meaningful and impactful work that can inspire change and development in communities around the world. ”

I work there

In my work, I explore the connections between artistic and scientific changes that intertwine, compete, and transform in the physical because of human observation and action.

Because nowhere else do I experience such a strong focus on and such extensive appreciation for my creativity as at Schmiede. The last three years Schmiede has been the best part of my year. Schmiede empowered me to see myself as an artist.

it is a ritual with friends

“Schmiede offers a rare and exciting chance to bring my vision for an interactive art project to life. More than just a residency, it’s a dynamic hub where creativity, collaboration, and experimentation thrive. It’s the perfect setting to develop a project that weaves storytelling and community engagement into an immersive experience. Picture a space where stories from Schmiede’s diverse artists seamlessly merge with the narratives of the surrounding city. This fusion of voices will shape the project and deepen its impact, drawing from real experiences and perspectives. By immersing myself in this vibrant environment, I can craft an interactive piece that speaks to local and global audiences. Schmiede’s commitment to fostering bold ideas aligns perfectly with my artistic approach. Its culture of pushing boundaries and embracing innovation creates the ideal conditions for groundbreaking work. This residency isn’t just about making art—it’s about sparking meaningful connections through storytelling, and I’m eager to be part of it.”

“Schmiede’s ethos of feral experimentation—untamed, interdisciplinary, and rooted in maker culture—resonates with my practice’s core: dismantling the myth of technological neutrality through collective, hands-on alchemy. I’m drawn to Schmiede25’s FAUST theme as a catalyst to confront the existential bargains embedded in AI’s rise—a theme I’ve ritualized in my work since GOLEM and QUANTUM AGENTS. Here, the Saline’s industrial archaeology and Schmiede’s hacker ethos offer a unique crucible to merge quantum computation, folklore, and communal dissent into a living critique of algorithmic determinism. I thrive in ecosystems where artists, engineers, and outsiders collide. Schmiede’s rewilding mandate—to decentralize, to corrode boundaries—mirrors my approach to AI as a “communal organism” rather than a corporate tool. By embedding my quantum oracle within Hallein’s material and social fabric, I aim to transform the Saline into a site of shared exorcism: a place where locals and makers collectively reprogram the narratives we’ve outsourced to machines. This isn’t about showcasing a finished object but igniting a process—a feral feedback loop between human intuition and machine entropy. At Schmiede, I want to learn from the chaos of collaborative making, to let my algorithms be infected by the rust of salvaged metal and the salt of human sweat. Let’s weaponize FAUST’s pact, not as a tragedy, but as a call to hack the devil’s code.

I love places where art and technology collide in unexpected ways. Schmiede feels like one of those rare environments where you can experiment freely, break things, rebuild, and push ideas beyond their limits. My work is about transforming fear and grotesque forms into something mesmerizing, and I think Schmiede is the perfect playground to develop this further, surrounded by people who aren’t afraid to take risks.

I want to participate in Schmiede because of its unique collaborative environment that fosters experimentation, interdisciplinary exchange, and hands-on creation. As an artist working at the intersection of landscape transformation, memory, and social structures, I am eager to connect with like-minded creators who explore technology, materiality, and conceptual storytelling. Schmiede’s focus on forging ideas and prototypes aligns with my artistic practice, which integrates natural materials, mechanical structures, and artificial intelligence. I see this as an opportunity to push my work further through dialogue, skill-sharing, and collective innovation.

I want to dance! I want to sweat! To meet artists and their practices and see what it does with me.

I want to work on my project Ada Smith and the Schmiede KI Lab (with Stephanie Meisl).

Sharing Listening Learning Making

I participated last year and want to go back to this magical place full of wonders where everything (creative) seems possible and time stands still 🙂 the less poetic answer: I would like to gain creative introspection and allow myself to proceed in my own writing and creative journey

taking a break from reality

Because this is where I learned to live and be / discover myself half a life ago. 🙂

Because its a great place to create, to network, to charge energy, to meet friends and to be updated in art trends. And especially because Schmiede is a place where one can accomplish most of the crazy ideas that are conceived there.

As I mention in the previous page, I am looking for meeting people, sharing my knowledge, be fed while feeding , and as I saw Schmiede seems to be the right occasion for this, as well as to begin working on my new project.

i’ve heard good things about it.

Because it is the best place to focus on creative projects and collaborate with others.

Because I want to meet interesting people and create projects with them. because is great

inspiration and collaboration

Schmiede is a special place I need to return to every September to meet the smiths and see/hear/feel/taste/smell what they are up to. Smiths are busy and have many ideas worth experiencing.  There is also a great sense of community and people are very helpful idea- and craftwise. Also, the limited setting of 10 days is good to finish something, or at least do the important parts without long discussions or being distracted by the daily life. After the last years at Schmiede I look forward to meeting this special bunch of friends I only see once per year. (actually, I start to more and more of them during the year too, but Schmiede is still special).

As always : learn, do, experiment, meet.

“We are bringing a strong and flexible project and are looking to expand it artistically and conceptually. Schmiede seems like the ideal environment to share it with like-minded creators, test new directions, and collaborate across disciplines. _Create: develop interactive technologies, prototype, explore _Collab: learn from others, share skills, understand different perspectives _Mix HCI with Arts: gain an artistic perspective on current HCI project that involves bodily movement and sonification”

I want to explore questions related to moral and ethics in the field of AI.

use ten focused days to work on my own project

As an artist, one of the biggest source for creativity is exchange. I could rephrase that sentence exchanging the word ‘artist’ with ‘human’ and the word ‘creativity’ with ‘humanity’. We need to talk and we need to listen. So when many people with different backgrounds but a similar interest come together it is the perfect environment to create new ideas, or shape existing ones. Also I love the mountains.

We are bringing a strong and flexible project and are looking to expand it artistically and conceptually.
Schmiede seems like the ideal environment to share it with like-minded creators, test new directions, and collaborate across disciplines.

Because I already participated at Schmiede and I could not think of a better place.

Because I loved it last year. It’s just too good to miss. Having attended Schmiede now for 10 years (???), it  remains one of the most nourishing artistic highlights of my year. To return to this chosen family, to feel and participate in the energy of creation, is something that nourishes my soul. I want to come to contribute what artistically if I can, but primarily to share in the celebration of our creative energy.

Because it is the best place to be 🙂

Meet nice people, collaborate in Projects,  get inspired

Seems an excellent experience in a multidisciplinary environment in which to cooperatively learn and further my experiences both within the realms of conceptualization as well as the capacities to broaden my artistic collaborative community continue working on my prototyping skills

Best Time of the year

its super nice and fun!

We are drawn to Schmiede for its spirit of collective experimentation, critical dialogue, and radical making. As long-time collaborators working at the intersection of art, technology, and performance, we thrive in environments that encourage risk-taking and cross-disciplinary exchange.

Schmiede’s focus on process over product aligns with our current shift toward live, participatory work that resists fixed outcomes. We’re especially excited by the opportunity to prototype elements of our new performance project Second Mountain within a community of engaged makers. The themes of rewilding and reclaiming space—both physical and conceptual—resonate deeply with our ongoing exploration of how personal and cultural narratives are constructed, disrupted, and reimagined. We see Schmiede not just as a residency, but as a catalyst for transformation: of ideas, of practice, and of relationships.

I’m going to run a lab “Cultivating Creative Ecologies: Weather Sensing, Machine Learning and Creative Informatics”. (title to be confirmed) with Daniel Fischer from dev_lol Linz for 3 days total plus I want to really dive into the other workshops and projects. I am also treating my lab and the festival as a pilot study for a new international consortium and summer school I am leading at WInchester School of Art, also collaborating with Rüdiger/Schmiede and several other international partners fro Belgium, Australia, Germany, US, Togo, and UK. So I want to participate for a lot of reasons, mainly to do the lab and also to attend other labs and meet new people, consolidate existing relationships and forge future projects!

“I was awarded the Feral AIR residency. Here’s what I answered there: Working and researching as a solo artist can be, well … solo. I believe residency programs like FeralAIR are vital to curating productive encounters and challenging discourses with diverse individuals (as opposed to always working within your bubble / with people you know). I would be honored to be part of your program. It’s also always nice to be paid for your work.”

Because doing so hitherto turned out to be great.

“ahoi. it is me again. name. a visual tale & story teller. i already applied for 2023. unfortunatley could not join as my studioship was kind of stucking in the ocean of work. and 2024 was the year of the high tide in vienna –  i was kind of the schmiede ghost as after a one day visit checking the schmiede area & heading back to vienna i was stucking again as no train was leaving vienna. so if you wondered about an empty chair in the niche, it was my trial to take part. so this year if you are kind and patient with me i want to take a seat & a desk would be nice as well & here is my again application in copy & paste & edit. i am a timeless ghost of a time not hunting any ghosts of time. i am interested in all kind of niches, my projects have a settlement in nostalgia, a romantic & poetic defense of emotional intelligence. i already joined the schmiede 2012 i worked on a cinema vertigo project which was presented at the media facade. i loved the time back then, also because that was one of the rare places, where i liked the networking aspect. it was nice to exchange with all kind of people from all kind of backgrounds. so i enjoyed being a smith over a decade ago. i love to create something offside, i kind of believe in productive output as a result of hiatus. as i  still hide away in front of my screen here in vienna very often. my intention is not merely the exchange of tapestry, i will point that out at your follow up question category concerning expectations.”

To meet all of you

Because Alex and Matti want me to

“Motivation / Warum Schmiede: Ich möchte an der Schmiede25 teilnehmen, um einen offenen, künstlerisch-spirituellen Reflexionsraum zu schaffen, in dem Körper, Symbol und Digitalität miteinander verschmelzen. Der interdisziplinäre Austausch in Hallein ist der ideale Ort, um mit anderen Künstler:innen über zentrale Lebensfragen zu forschen und daraus neue ästhetische Ausdrucksformen zu entwickeln.”

Always a great space to experiment, learn new things and meet likeminded people

I always loved attending the exibition at the end of the Schmiede, and I’ve heard lots of great things from those attending. I would like to see it a bit closer from the inside.

“I really enjoyed the first time last year it was very inspiring and it really helped me to feel included and a bit more at home in Austria. Also this year I will be one of the Lab Leaders”

Uncomfortable Interactions

Be surrounded by different makers, get inspired, make new friends, help each other, make Schmiede 2025 something not to forget!

Last year, I was very focused on finishing an art piece (Hegemony Eroding) for the Werkschau. This year I want to float around more and get involved into several projects with other people. Last year, I was very focused on finishing an art piece (Hegemony Eroding) for the Werkschau. This year I want to float around more and get involved into several projects with other people.

because of you guys.

Currently, I am working on an audio hardware project and am part of the Teleagriculture project. Having not participated for several years, I always cherish the time at Schmiede for its unique atmosphere and the valuable networking opportunities it provides.

” I have been impressed by the multidisciplinary as well as humble nature of Schmiede. The possibility of participation would provide an immense impulse for me, hopefully enriching my practise and making me more aware of other disciplines or ways of combining, connecting with them. I am interested in connecting with various types of artists and non-artists or anti-artists and learning from what they do ”

Three of my friends are applying and I hope to be their great company in making new encounters with people and with experimenting together. I learned a lot through my very first residency in an old abandoned museum at Begehungen Festival. It was a small city where one could get to know the inhabitants, collectors minds and self build community who made that possible year after year. This summer I could only wish for an inspiring place of people who share thoughts, who work, who swing hammers for art.

Plan, produce, perform together with humans and agents.

 🙂

“To blend of collaborative prototyping, artistic approaches and focus to community aligns perfectly with my practice of fusing science, art, and co-creative approaches. I’m always drawn to the immersive environments that encourage experimentation across disciplines—exactly the kind of context where my work thrives. I see participating Schmiede as a rare opportunity to co-create with passionate peers, prototype new human-AI-human artistic methods, and contribute my experience in participatory culture and rather radical pedagogy. All in all, I believe Schmiede’s approach of collective exploration can spark new trajectories in my ongoing work, and vice versa.”

for the experience of collaborative creation, learning new things and getting to know interesting people

I want to melt into and experience all of the artistic co-creation, sharing of ideas, inspiration, creative vibes that I have heard about from earlier participants! I would like to use Schmiede as a playground to try out new ideas but also be inspired by what others are doing, expand my creative horizons, meet new people and participate in the collective creation.

 to support the team

A friend of mine took part last year. Not only did he seem to have the time of his life, he also created something really amazing that we still talk about every other week.

I long for a space to experiment and meet other people who do. An open mind and eye and ear, a space to not know. I like to discover new places, I like to learn, I like to ask questions. I have a feeling Schmiede might be a good place for such things.

Because it is an amazing community and magical things happen during Schmiede.

because it could be interesting to return there after quite some years: I changed (hopefully to the positive 😉 + the attendees changed (I guess)

Because we want to be part of it again and see what we can we can achieve with our newborn Schmiede member Henri Because we want to be part of it again and see what we can we can achieve with our newborn Schmiede member Henri

I want to gather new inspiration and work on ongoing media arts projects and enjoy the community of like-minded people.

I am interested in talks and spontaneous projects To show my project

Am I Real and further work on it

I love the community and I have new experiments and ideas to bring to the community. I like the interactive way of creating and sharing together

I have done similar things (ie. Digital Naturalism) and I find it a nice platform for what I do, that is finding spaces interested in open science, creative experimentation, critical application of technologies.  I am interested in bringing an unorthodox interdisciplinary scientific background, as well as a background in creative experimentation across new technological paradigms.

I would like to use the Schmiede as a space to refine my own projects away from concrete production pressures, and to develop new concepts and forms for my work through exchange with others. I hope to enter a discourse that will offer me insights beyond those of conventional theater work.

For me, Schmiede is above all inspiration through the interaction between different artists. I was very impressed by the open and active working atmosphere. I’ve never experienced such free and intensive collaboration anywhere else.

My motivation for being part of Schmiede is to meet new people, get inspired, share my ideas and creations, and simply have a great time in a creative, open environment.

 Because I love you!

boredom

Art & social

I want to participate at Schmiede because it sounds like an amazing place where creative people from different fields come together. We often have great ideas but lack the people to bring them to life. Being able to work on each other’s ideas, create new things together, and actually turn projects into reality instead of just leaving them as concepts—that’s what excites me. Schmiede feels like a great space to connect, collaborate, and create.

to present schmiede baby #2

I already participated three times and the vibe of Schmiede is simply outstanding. Looking forward to meet friends from back then and make new ones – therefore for networking reasons, applying my background and skills in a project for the Werkschau and making lots of noise 🙂

i want to come back with my wife clarissa, i met at schmiede and bring our schmiede babys mika and lio, as well as i want to present the wrestling lab with selina another passionate wrestling artist.

Because we liked it last year

Because I want to be on a team with Michael Reichmann and his sonification project. I can’t participate every day but would like to support him!

This year I would like to offer my first Workshop at schmiede. And I would like to participate at workshops. Learn from others and collaborate more.

The ten days have become a highlight of my year, which I don’t want to miss since 2018 ❤️

got to know some pople who are regulars there and heard good things. have a project in mind and it would be nice to have a dedicated time and space to explore my thoughts.

i like the open collaborations,

I miss u all ❤️

Because we liked it last year

Experiment ideas

 fun, work, fun

“I want to participate at Schmiede because I’ve been creating quietly, for years, with no big tools or training just my phone, my eyes, and my heart. It all started as a way to heal, to breathe, to find small pieces of peace in my everyday life. But now, I feel this strong need to share. To connect. To be part of something bigger than myself. Schmiede feels like a space where I can finally open up. Where I don’t have to be perfect or polished, just honest. A place where emotions matter, where stories even simple ones have a place. I want to meet people who also create from feeling, not from pressure. I want to learn from them, and let them see my world, too.”

Work and people

i am in the AI lab with Steph

bc Schmiede is geil!

I would like to expand my network of music, tech and art nerds. I love to be exposed to new ideas and creative approaches, especially from people with more experience. 🙂

I really enjoyed my last stay in 2020 and as I was travelling alot the past years never found time to come back again but would like to do so this year. Also looking forward to meet new and familiar faces and collaborate!

“I want to be a Smith, because such a large collection of artists all in one place creating art to me is an incredibly inspiring place to be. I know already a couple of artists that are going (Volker Sondermann, Ann-Marie Najderek, Liepa Vozgirdaitė and Kristupas Gikas) with whom I have on going projects (die Internationale Volksmusik).  Schmiede would be a perfect opportunity to get to work on this project all together in one space while work shopping ideas with the other participants. Since I don’t live in the same city as them, having the opportunity to all be together, without distractions for 10 days, would be a really great to develop and present further the ideas of die Internationale Volksmusik. The attitude of doing, which I picked up from the videos of Schmiede, are exactly what I need right now as an artist. A together space, to create, present and document with low stakes and a friendly, positive environment. It seems to be that Schmiede would provide exactly that. ”

Because the thought of being at home during that time and wondering what all the smiths are doing is re

I would like to deepen and at the same time renew my practice and to meet people who might be interested in similar things but maybe with a different approach or using different techniques. I imagine unexpected ideas and exchanges might come up in such surroundings which might be the part I’m most curious about. I’m also really interested in the location, as I enjoy working site specific

A friend of mine who’s a media artist recommendates it to me. She have been to Schmiede before and told me she had the best and craziest experience at Schmiede, and and spoke so highly about Schmiede, so I was truly intrigued hearing it and wanted to experience it too. Then I searched online and read some of the news and articles, and felt there’s a magical power at Schmiede that drives people crazy and I felt the great passion from the participants. I also saw people keep coming back to participate Schmiede so many times, so I’m quite amazed by that. I also want to feel that power and passion and make things together. I’m originally from China and am currently based in the US, and was not very familiar with this art and technology and DIY scene in Europe and Austria, so that was another reason for me to explore the scene there and meet some wonderful people and get inspired by them, and hopefully working on some interesting projects together.

Networking with interesting people. Perhaps, sharing ideas and knowledge.

“To find or process or construct ideas for our current social world. Work on a community building idea – find a product, a video, a book, an image, something to encourage human beings to interact. Something to encourage people to be in touch with themselfs and others. I don’t have an exact plan for it but the need for it and having the space and people like the Schmiede programe seems like the space to dig and build! ”

i am interested in the exchange between various art disciplines and ways in which these can inform my own artistic work. and vice versa, of course.

To have a creative outlet and meet interesting people

Gorke wants me

I miss my friends 🙂
