if that is not enough:  here the short hand of a longer dialogue I had about what I think a lab is, can be and should be.

A Schmiede Lab is deliberately underspecified. It doesn’t prescribe outcomes or demand expertise — it lowers the threshold so that encounters and experiments can happen on their own terms, driven by the community, not by the institution. Its job isn’t instruction or production. It’s making the conditions under which unexpected work becomes possible.

Schmiede doesn’t decide what matters. Not because it doesn’t care, but because deciding would close off the space it’s trying to hold open. What gets attention, what turns into something — that’s left to the people in the room.

Which means the responsibility runs the other way. The Lab is inert without curiosity, commitment, energy brought into it. It doesn’t supply meaning. It offers a room, some time, and a set of possibilities. Meaning, if it comes, comes from what people bring and do with it — nothing more is promised, and nothing less is possible.

Sometimes it is enough to write it out. Sometimes it takes a process. We want to keep it light. You can give it gravitas.

For me a Schmiede Lab is structurally light individualised Schmiede within Schmiede.
For you it can be what time and space create with your curiosity and engagement.
